July 5th., THE BLESSING

Saturday JULY 5, 2008

LEEDS JAZZ presents THE BLESSING at THE WARDROBE, LEEDS

Jim Barr (bass); Clive Deamer (drums); Pete Judge (trumpet); Jake McMurchie (saxophone)
When a band reveals its influences to include Kings of Leon, Morphine and
Albert Ayler, you know they're something out of the ordinary. So welcome
The Blessing, a jazz-rock four piece from Bristol, ultra-contemporary in
both sound and outlook. For instance take the drums and bass of Clive
Deamer and Jim Barr (otherwise known as Portishead's live rhythm section).
They're far from supporting players, never content with providing mere
accompaniment to the upfront horns of Pete Judge on trumpet and Jake
McMurchie on saxophone. Instead they steal a more lead role, attacking and
plundering all over the place. Barr's bass actually sounds like it belongs
on the records of Gang of Four.
With the two horns confidently riding these jagged rhythms, The Blessing
come highly recommended to anyone whose ears are appreciative of the
Acoustic Ladyland/Polar Bear axis of excellence and also to rock fans who
never had a clue they liked jazz!
The Blessing's debut CD 'All is Yes' (CAKE CACD 78550) has been nominated
in the Best Album category of this year's BBC Jazz Awards

Thursday JULY 17, 2008

LEEDS JAZZ presents HYPNOTIC BRASS ENSEMBLE + DJ BASS CLEF at THE WARDROBE, LEEDS

Tycho (sousaphone, voice); Seba (bass trombone, voice); Saiph (tenor
trombone,voice); Chris Anderson (drums, percussion, congas, bells, voice);
Uttama (euphonium, voice); Ben Yehuda (trumpet, voice); Jafar Baji
(trumpet, voice); Amal Baji (trumpet, voice); Tarik (trumpet).
First UK tour by New York's Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. This band have to be
seen and heard to be fully experienced. Formed of eight brothers, all sons
of Phil Cohran, former trumpeter with Sun Ra's Arkestra, plus drummer 360
(the only non-blood relative), they deliver a unique and exhilarating
sound, mixing elements of jazz, Afropop, funk, soul and RnB with a powerful
hip-hop sensibility. After building a fearsome reputation in the US for
their guerrilla gigs on the streets of Chicago and NY, the band have been
touring clubs and venues around Europe, most recently storming the UK on
dates with Mos Def.
They are joined on tour by Bass Clef, another true original and festival
favourite. Hailing from Bristol's eclectic dubstep scene, the Bass Clef
experience is not to be missed, featuring trombone, pirate flags, and a
maelstrom of hand-percussion.
