Chris Batchelor and Myra Melford began playing together as part of the Equal Interest + project that toured the UK in 1999. Batchelor and altoist Steve Buckley subsequently formed the award winning Big Air with Melford in mind, the band releasing their eponymous CD to great critical acclaim earlier this year. Batchelor also has a long association with Mark Sanders, including the Buckley/Batchelor CD Life As We Know It and in the Simon Fell Ensemble. Melford and Sanders have never appeared together before, and this is a particularly intriguing prospect. The trio will play a combination of new compositions and open improv pieces. Melford is constantly developing an extended technique approach to the piano, and is also using prepared piano techniques, while Batchelor and Sanders will also use electronics.
A wonderful gig to finish this celebratory Leeds Jazz season. If this trio is just half as good as Equal Interest + or Big Air, we’re all in for a great night.
This trio appears exclusively at Seven, Leeds and the Vortex, London as part of the London Jazz Festival.
