Hank Jones at la Villette
Hank Jones, born in 1918, is the oldest of the three Jones brothers. Thad (b 1923), the trumpeter and pianist, and Elvin (b 1927), the drummer, have both passed away, but on Friday evening Hank, who celebrated his ninety-first birthday in July, came to the Cité de la Musique to play the first of two concerts for the the annual festival Jazz à la Villette. Hank’s vitality is evident from his Summer 2009 European tour schedule.
Following Jackie Terrasson’s flamboyant opening set with Hank’s elegant miniaturism required a major re-focussing of the audience’s ears as Hank played with exquisite assurance a selection of standards from the last eighty years.
In the picture he acknowledges the applause for his fifth encore: Round Midnight.
There’s video of several of the 2009 concerts here.
