As the name suggests this band is a reunion of the Quartet that was in existence for six years from 1996. It’s members are amongst the most experienced jazz muscians in the country and the group developed an extremely powerful musical identity during it’s lifetime. Now reformed for a two-week tour (at the suggestion of Seven Jazz Leeds and Sheffield Jazz) band will be playing a mixture of new music specially written for the tour and pieces previously played or recorded. The Quartet has recorded five cds: We Go Back (1996), Live In Glasgow (1997), Burns (2000), Animation (2001), Somewhere In The Hills (2002). This group is one of the most powerful and exciting bands ever to appear on the UK Jazz Scene.
Jim Mullen: Moved to London from Glasgow in 1969, going on to work in the groups of Pete Brown (2 albums) Brian Auger (3 albums) Vinegar Joe (1 Album) and Kokomo (1 album). In 1975 he met sax player Dick Morrissey and began a 15 year association. After the demise of Morrissey Mullen he worked with jazz vocalist Claire Martin (3 albums) and formed a series of quartets (3 albums). As sideman he is in demand by visiting U.S. stars like Gene Harris, Mose Allison, Jimmy Smith, Weldon Irvine, Percy Sledge, Teddy Edwards, Plas Johnson, Jimmy Witherspoon and Terry Collier. He is twice winner of ‘Best Guitar’ in the British Telecom jazz awards and ‘Best Guitar’ in the British Jazz Awards for 2000.
Gary Husband: originally based in Leeds, Gary has recently been tutoring drummers from Leeds College of Music jazz course as part of the Jazz Yorkshire futures scheme. Current projects include live and recording work with John McLaughlin, Jack Bruce, Robin Trower, Allan Holdsworth Trio with Jimmy Johnson, Mike Stern, Hamburg’s NDR Big Band and Frankfurt’s HR Big Band. He has also worked with artists such as Billy Cobham, Colin Towns, Jeff Beck, Gongzilla, Gary Moore, Level 42 and Mark King, Steve Topping, Maria Schneider, Jim Mullen, Randy Brecker, Andy Summers, Alan Skidmore, Chris Squire, Aydin Esen, Peter Erskine, Al Jarreau amongst many others.
Gareth Williams: One of the most intensely creative, dynamic and exciting performers on the UK scene, Gareth Williams has been receiving increasing critical and public acclaim since becoming a professional musician in the early 90s. He has for many yearsworked as pianist/MD for internationally acclaimed jazz singer Claire Martin (several times winner of the British Jazz Singer of the Year awards) and has also been involved in arranging her music, writing original compositions for her band, singing and playing guitar. He has worked with many international jazz greats, includilg Art Farmer, George Coleman, Bud Shank, James Moody and Dave Liebman, plus top British musicians such as Jim Mullen, Martin Taylor, Martin Drew, Tommy Smith, Tim Garland, Clark Tracey, Gwyneth Herbert and Iain Ballamy.
Mick Hutton: turned professional as a jazz double-bassist in 1981. In addition to leading his own bands he has played on over sixty albums and performed in many countries worldwide. Amongst the artists he has played with are: Django Bates, Kenny Wheeler, Jack Bruce, Bill Bruford, Humphrey Lyttelton, Nigel Kennedy, Acker Bilk, Jim Mullen, Gary Husband, Bob Berg, Pharoah Saunders, Tommy Smith, Courtney Pine, John Scofield, Annie Ross, Mose Allison and Bobo Stenson.

FRIDAY 9 MARCH – SHATNERS BASSOON + FROM A BAD GIRL
Shatner’s Bassoon, a band of five Leeds based improvisers influenced by William Shatner’s monologues and the perils of jazz induced trances, describe their disjointed sound as Improvised Rock-Puke. They’re playing with musical clichés and conventions to produce music which negotiates a path from the sinister to the humorous and surreal.

Born to Brew is a fermentation of shape-shifting improvisations, stories of minimalism and intoxication that wander through dense soundscapes. Like if Cecil Taylor and Samuel Beckett were out on a night of romance and in quest of a good bar fight. Premiering daring new compositions that merge Noonan’s new Irish-American storytelling style improvised on the drum set.

Pair these with Loop Collective saxophonist Tom Challenger’s exciting electro-acoustic trio and you have just the type of explosive mixture that Fusebox was created for.

This film has been broadcast a couple of times on Channel 4, but is rarely screened outside of art galleries. I am interested in trying to raise the profile of the event to local people and in particular to the people who were involved in the event 11 years ago from Sheffield and the surrounding area. Miners who had worked at the Orgreave colliery and had been there on the day were involved in the re-enactment, and it was their friends and families, and other affected local people, who made up the vast majority of the hundreds of people who came to watch the re-enactment.
This event is equally a fantastic opportunity to see a rarely screened fascinating film for free in the wonderful refurbished City Varieties in Leeds. It is being screened between the matinee and evening performance of Red Ladder’s ‘The Big Society’ – and as such is a brilliant double bill. Phill Jupitus, Boff Whalley, David Douglass and others will form a panel to discuss the film after the screening.

It seemed a civil war between the North and the South of the country was taking place in all but name. The image of this pursuit up the hill stuck in my mind and for years I wanted to find out what exactly happened on that day with a view to re-enacting or commemorating it in some way. It would not be an exaggeration to say that the strike, like a civil war, had a traumatically divisive effect at all levels of life in the UK. Families were torn apart because of divided loyalties, the union movement was split on its willingness to support the National Union of Mineworkers, the print media especially contributed to the polarization of the arguments to the point where there appeared to be little space for a middle ground. So in all but name it became an ideological and industrial battle between the two sections of British* society.

Seven Jazz Leeds: the January programme
The new year is upon us – and may it be a happy one for you and yours. Here’s a suggested new year resolution – “must go and see more live jazz..!”
We’ve lots to tempt you in anyway– our evening highlight this coming month is US mainstream tenor sax star Scott Hamilton appearing with Leeds favourite sons saxman Alan Barnes and pianist Dave Newton and his trio on Thursday 19th. January. Our Sunday afternoon gigs offer you everything fom the nine piece Django/Hot Club band led by Ben Lowman, guitar legend Gary Boyle revisiting his funk roots through to vibesman Corey Mwamba with an improvising trio with Dave Kane and Joshua Blackmore. Them on 2nd February we are proud to present pianist Zoe Rahman with her new Kindred Spirits band….

Gary Boyle guitar, Paul Birchall keyboard, Bruce Reid bass, Jonathan Hartley drums. Guitarist Gary Boyle’s past bands read like a who’s who of British rock pop and jazz. He has worked with Dusty Springfield, Brian Auger, Julie Driscoll, Mike Westbrook, Soft Machine, Mike Gibbs Eberhard Weber and Eddie Harris. His albums from his bands Isotope and Triple Echo sell for a fortune on EBay. His latest quartet features Snake Davis’s keyboard man Paul Birchill – they will revisit some of Gary’s Jazz-Funk roots.

Sunday afternoon 29th January: Corey Mwamba/Dave Kane/Joshua Blackmore
This is an acoustic trio that creates living music for people, in the moment. The language they use mixes popular, folk and art music from all over the world. Corey Mwemba is a vibes player who as well as having made four electro-acoustic albums, is on two albums made by Quantic, one by Arun Ghosh and one by Ty. He’s worked with lots of people including The Heliocentrics, Orphy Robinson, Robert Mitchell, Andy Hamilton, Scanner and Tony Kofi. Dave Kane is a Leeds based double bass player and composer who had been feted for his work with pianist Matthew Bourne and Stephen Davis and has a fantastic duo with the trumpeter Alex Bonney which performed with Ken Vandermark in 2008. Dave is also founder of a creative musicians’ collective LIMA. Joshua Blackmore is part of the BBC Jazz Award-winning Curios trio with Tom Cawley and Sam Burgess, and has worked with Django Bates, Aloosh and the Floating Points Ensemble. Popular and highly acclaimed pianist Zoe Rahman shot to wider public awareness when her luminous album Melting Pot was nominated for the 2006 Mercury Music Prize, returns to Seven with her fifth album Kindred Spirits, part of an extensive UK tour. Released on 23 January on her own Manushi label the music continues her vibrant exploration her English, Irish and Bengali heritage combined with her sparkling contemporary piano work and framed by her strong melodic composing style. Pour rendre hommage à Thelonious Monk, le pianiste Jason Moran a conçu un événement original dans l’histoire du jazz. Car son projet multimédia intitulé In My Mind est bien plus que l’habituel tribute to.
Lorsque le San Francisco Jazz Festival lui a proposé de recréer le célèbre concert du Thelonious Monk Orchestra à Town Hall en 1959, Moran s’est d’abord plongé dans les archives du photographe W. Eugene Smith, qui avait côtoyé les plus grands musiciens de jazz dans son loft de Manhattan transformé en studio d’enregistrement : il y a notamment découvert des bandes contenant de longues conversations entre Monk, d’habitude plutôt taciturne, et son arrangeur, Hall Overton.
Avec l’aide des artistes Glenn Ligon et David Dempewolf, Moran a porté ces archives sur scène, pour un véritable spectacle où les images de Monk ainsi que sa voix accompagnent une relecture de sa musique des plus inventives.
As a tribute to Thelonious Monk, the pianist Jason Moran has designed a unique event in the history of jazz. For his multimedia project titled In My Mind is much more than the usual tribute to.
When the San Francisco Jazz Festival has proposed to recreate the famous concert of Thelonious Monk Orchestra at Town Hall in 1959, Moran was first dipped into the archives of photographer W. Eugene Smith, who had rubbed shoulders with the greatest jazz musicians in his Manhattan loft converted into a recording studio: there is notably found tapes containing lengthy conversations between Monk, usually rather taciturn, and his arranger Hall Overton.
With the help of artist Glenn Ligon and David Dempewolf, Moran brought these archives on stage for a spectacle where images of Monk and his voice accompanying a reading of his most inventive music. (Google TX :)
